Why is the manufacturer capacity and calculated capacity different?

It is normal for BinSentry to have a different Calculated Capacity than the manufacturers specification.

  • BinSentry Technicians take specific measurements for every Bin that has a sensor to ensure we know the exact size of the bin.
  • These dimensions not only help us understand the size of the bin, they also help us position the sensor for the algorithm to provide the most accurate level possible.
  • Our calculated capacity does not take in to account the topper portion of a bin though we are able to read it with our sensor. This is due to how feed piles in the center of a bin during a refill. It will take up that space in the topper and we do this to help avoid overfilling a bin.
  • The calculated capacity is also influenced by the bulk density of the product in the bin. By default it its set at 40lbs/cu ft (the same as bin manufacturers).
  • Depending on the density of a given feed or ration, different amounts could fit in the bin given the same available space
  • The result of all of these factors is that the Calculated Capacity will often be lower than the Manufacturers Listed Capacity.
  • Note: BinSentry Admins can configure your account to include the topper portion, however it is an account wide change for all bins.
